Students and a National Park Service ranger will explore A School Day in 1872, learning about life on the American frontier during the homesteading era. The program covers the requirements of the Homestead Act of 1862, why families moved west, and how homesteaders valued education — often building one-room schoolhouses before permanent homes.
Through discussion and activities, students will compare and contrast a classroom in 1872 with their own education today, gaining a deeper understanding of daily life for frontier children and the impact of westward expansion.
