Details
Have you ever dreamed of sending an experiment to space? Genes in Space invites students in grades 7–12 across the United States to design a real biotechnology experiment that could be launched to the International Space Station. Students do not need prior lab experience. Creativity, curiosity, and big ideas are encouraged!
Students may participate individually or in pairs and must have an adult sponsor such as a parent, teacher, or mentor. Participants will explore space biology, develop a research question, and design an experiment using real tools available to astronauts.
How it Works
Step 1: Choose a Topic
Select a space biology idea that interests you. Focus on a question with a molecular or genetic basis that can be tested.
Step 2: Develop Your Research Question
Identify an open scientific question and define your hypothesis or research goal.
Step 3: Design Your Experiment
Create an experimental approach using tools from the Genes in Space Toolkit available to astronauts.
Step 4: Submit Your Proposal
Review your work and submit your experiment design through the official contest website.
