Have you ever wondered how animals survive in extreme environments or how objects move and change direction? In this unit, you'll begin by exploring habitats around the world and discovering how living things meet their basic needs. You’ll learn how plants and animals are adapted to survive in places that are hot, cold, wet, dry, or crowded, and how living and nonliving parts of an environment work together. As you sketch, model, and record your discoveries, you'll ask big questions about what happens when habitats change and how organisms depend on their environment.

In the second part of the unit, you'll shift your focus to motion and forces. You'll investigate pushes and pulls, experiment with ramps and surfaces, and observe how barriers and collisions affect movement. Using what you've learned, you'll design and build a Mini Motion Machine that shows how motion can be guided and change.
