How can we tell the story of the night sky?

The night sky is full of patterns that people have been observing for thousands of years. In this unit, you will become sky scientists as you study how the sun, moon, and stars appear to move in predictable ways. Through hands-on observations, drawing models, and comparing data across days and weeks, you will learn how Earth’s rotation and orbit create the patterns we see. Each lesson builds scientific understanding while encouraging curiosity, creativity, and real-world connections.

As you observe night sky patterns and explore how constellations are formed, you will begin crafting your own constellation as a final project. You will design a star pattern, map brightness and distances, and write a constellation story inspired by what you’ve learned, just as ancient cultures did when mapping the sky. By the end of the unit, you will create and present a constellation “tour” that shows not only your creativity but also your understanding of sky patterns, scientific models, and the beauty of the night sky.
