7th/8th English Language Arts Theme 1- Journey Through the Genres

Tuesday 7 am PT / 8 am MT / 9 am CT / 10 am ET

Class Details:

Through a rich blend of grade-appropriate novels and CommonLit 360 resources, this course brings literature alive for readers and writers. Students will not only learn about key literary elements, from plot structure to character development and conflict, but also connect these stories to real-life events through cross-curricular studies. Writing units will cover a range of styles, including research, persuasive, narrative, and summary. Students will be expected to write five-paragraph essays. Each week, students will complete a reading assignment and come prepared to discuss key elements of the text and respond to comprehension questions during a Zoom meeting, among other various assignments. The approved book list can be found in the class description in the registration system. Approved Book List (Required) 1st Semester Book List: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan; Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper; 2nd Semester Book List: The Bletchley Riddle by Ruta Sepetys; The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen;  Cost: $100 per year (charged $50 per semester) - or 10,000 points (charged 5,000 points per semester) which comes from student's supplemental learning fund.
