The big ideas in kindergarten include: representing and comparing whole numbers, initially with sets of objects; understanding and applying addition and subtraction; and describing shapes and space. More time in kindergarten is devoted to numbers than to other topics.
The mathematical work for kindergarten is partitioned into 8 units:
Math in Our World
Numbers 1–10
Flat Shapes All Around Us
Understanding Addition and Subtraction
Composing and Decomposing Numbers to 10
Numbers 0–20
Solid Shapes All Around Us
Putting it All Together
Materials: Connecting cubes, pattern blocks, counters, geoblocks, solid shapes, 5-frames, 10-frames, crayons/colored pencils, access to printer for lessons and extra pages linked in lessons
Anchor classes are asynchronous, teacher-led classes. Students do NOT have a live meeting. Daily work is provided, and the anchor teacher grades the final weekly assignment. Teachers provide biweekly videos and add instructional supports to each day's lesson. For more information about the curriculum and assignments, please visit the Braintree website.
