Club details:

Monday | 10:30 AM MT, 12:30 PM ET

Instructor: Laura Johnson

Grades: 5-8

For this LEGO club, we will utilize LEGO Club time to help our LEGO master builders connect with other LEGO enthusiasts. We will have a basic lesson on a topic and then divide the group into breakout rooms, where they can approach the topic in any way they like, as they build and share ideas and give each other encouragement. Sharing their ideas and building after a set time will allow them to learn and grow, and feel proud of what they have accomplished. We will also host larger build challenges that students can work on throughout the week or over two class sessions, allowing them to create big builds. Kits would be welcome, but not required; If we have several KIT building enthusiasts, we can create a breakout room for those builders, etc. Some topic/challenge ideas I have for this club include:
  • Free Building Days: Chat and build your favorite scene
  • Pick a Biome Challenge: Desert, Water, Forest, Mountain etc in groups
  • Transportation Day: Car, Plane, Train, Boat - Pick your group
  • Build with one color: Limit builders to using only one color of LEGOs.
  • Blindfold build: Build something while blindfolded (with guidance).
  • Build with time constraints: Set a time limit for building challenges.
  • Build something that moves: Create a LEGO creation that has moving parts.
  • Build a LEGO game: Design a game that can be played with LEGOs.
  • Classic tower build: Work together to build the tallest tower possible.
  • Large model build: Collaborate to build a large and complex LEGO creation.
  • Puzzles and brain teasers: Solve LEGO-based puzzles and riddles.
  • Storytelling challenge: Use LEGOs to create a story and present it to the group.
Completing these types of challenges in a Zoom/digital setting will create interesting challenges for students to work together and communicate so that they can fit their pieces of their LEGO builds together in their group.
