Accelerated Reader/MyOn

ELA K-12th

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer-based program that helps teachers manage and monitor students' independent reading practice. Students choose books at their appropriate reading level, read them at their own pace, and then take short quizzes to assess comprehension. The program awards points based on the book’s difficulty and the student’s quiz performance, helping motivate readers and track progress. While AR is used across K–12, it is especially popular in elementary and middle school to build strong reading habits and improve literacy skills.

Even better, this year we have myOn in conjunction with AR!  myON is a personalized digital literacy platform designed for pre-K–12 students, offering access to over 8,200 enhanced digital books from publishers like Capstone, with a mix of 70% nonfiction, 30% fiction, and 10% Spanish titles. It matches books to students’ interests, grade, and Lexile reading level based on an initial placement exam and interest inventory. Features include reading supports like audio narration, highlighting, an embedded dictionary, and zoom, fostering engagement for diverse learners, including reluctant readers and English Language Learners. The platform tracks reading progress, provides real-time reports, and supports offline reading via apps for iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, and Chrome. myON News delivers age-appropriate articles with multimedia to enhance media literacy. Teachers can assign reading and writing projects, monitor growth, and align content with Common Core standards. The platform promotes equity in access, supports classroom and home use, and has shown significant reading growth.
