Comic Book Day

Celebrate Comic Book Day with Braintree Academy!

September 25 is Comic Book Day—a holiday that celebrates the art and science behind comic books and encourages everyone to read, create, and share their favorites (Time and Date). But comic books aren’t just fun—they’re also powerful tools for learning.

Why Comic Books Are More Than Entertainment

Comic books combine storytelling, art, and literacy in a way that engages readers of all ages. For students, this makes them an incredible foundation for building ELA skills:

  • Vocabulary growth: Research shows that comic book readers are exposed to an average of 53.5 rare words per 1,000 words—that’s more than most adult novels or children’s books!

  • Reading motivation: Comics provide shorter text chunks supported by visuals, which makes them especially helpful for reluctant readers and English language learners.

  • Critical thinking: Analyzing panels, sequencing events, and interpreting visual cues sharpen comprehension and inference skills.

  • Storytelling: Creating comics develops narrative structure, character development, and dialogue—all essential ELA skills.

Join the Global Comic Book Movement

Your student doesn’t have to stop at reading or creating comics on their own—they can be part of something bigger:

Try This at Home: Comic Book Challenge

Encourage your student to:

  1. Read a comic book (classic superhero, manga, or even a graphic novel).

  2. Write their own 1–2 page comic strip about a favorite subject in school.

  3. Share it with family, friends, or even their classmates at Braintree!

Comic books prove that learning doesn’t always look like a textbook. With every panel, students practice literacy, creativity, and storytelling while having fun. This Comic Book Day, let’s celebrate how comics bring reading to life!
