Exploring the Ocean
Big Question
Why are oceans so important to life on Earth?
Introduction to Oceans
The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet and plays a vital role in sustaining life on Earth. It helps regulate climate, produces much of the oxygen we breathe, and is home to an incredible variety of living things—from microscopic plankton to massive whales.
Oceans are constantly moving through waves and currents, shaping coastlines and connecting ecosystems across the globe. Beneath the surface, there are layers of depth—from sunlit waters filled with life to dark, mysterious zones where only specially adapted creatures can survive.
Understanding the ocean helps students explore science, geography, environmental responsibility, and the interconnectedness of our world.
Ocean Animals & Habitats
The ocean is made up of diverse habitats, each supporting different kinds of life:
Coral Reefs – Bright ecosystems full of fish and sea creatures
Open Ocean – Home to large animals like whales and sharks
Deep Sea – Dark, high-pressure zones with glowing organisms
Coastal Areas – Where land and sea interact
👉 Fun Fact: Some deep-sea animals create their own light through bioluminescence!
